The latest and greatest in superyacht technology revolves around entertainment – innovative HD experiences that put the audience right among the action.
From massive wrap-around LED screens, to extending walls that use elaborate hydraulic mechanisms, and even double as a disco or submarine viewing chamber, the theatre is on the 'must-have' list.
Superyacht cinema rooms will soon offer a 9D experience – hailed as the "totally immersive experience". This technology will combine 3D film with physical effects including chair movements and multi-sensory effects like smoke, rain, lighting and special aromas.
Currently on the drawing board, the world's first IMAX theatre onboard a superyacht.
Yacht Intelligence, Ken Freivokh Design, Genesis Technologies and IMAX have partnered in what they call "The Nemo Room".
This groundbreaking private theatre will not only be used to watch current theatrical blockbuster releases, but it will also project live underwater CCTV images from outside the yacht onto the walls inside the theatre, thus giving the concept its name, The Nemo Room. The theatre will also be used for Blu-Ray, streaming live content, gaming and video conferencing.
Ken Freivokh is currently accommodating the design in a 150m superyacht for a client who was keen to be the first to invite friends and charter guests to savour the sights and sounds of IMAX on his superyacht.
The design parameters for the IMAX Private Theatre are being pushed to the limits by the design team who are working within the unusual space of a hull (an area which would otherwise be used for tankage and storage) in order to create the desired cinematic experience.
There are other considerations in the yacht's design and build - from the technology itself to which carpets and furniture provide optimum acoustics. The hull superstructure had to be entirely designed around The Nemo Room, reinforcedto accommodate the viewing panels, to reduce vibration and not compromise other onboard functions.
The theatre space was designed so that the client enters via sliding walls instead of doors, thus creating a seamless surround screen and completing the famous IMAX immersive effect.
"Superyachts have been and always will be huge entertainment vessels, and technology will play an increasingly important role in achieving that goal," said Ken Freivokh. "It is why so many exciting things are happening in that space. This is just the tip of the iceberg."
